what are the effects that sleep deprivation has upon one's health?

Sleep deprivation is an important topic to teens because it suffers many consequences. "Total and partial sleep deprivation induce adverse changes in cognitive performance. First and foremost, total sleep deprivation impairs attention and working memory, but it also affects other functions, such as long-term memory and decision-making" (Alhola and Polo- Kantolo). Other consequences of sleep deprivation are that, "total sleep deprivation has been associated with general psycho-motors slowing and diminished cognitive performance. In effective disorders, only one night of sleep deprivation may improve mood in 40-60% of subjects with major depressive disorder, whereas bipolar patients may even turn into hypo-mania. Thus, in humans, sleep deprivation is clearly related to altered emotional and effective functioning" (Klumpers ,Veltman, et al). These are just some of the apparent effects in that sleep deprivation causes, in which why sleep deprivation is such an important topic for teens.
